Pets recovering from intestinal illness or surgery should be fed a bland diet that will not irritate the digestive system. Pets that have been vomiting should not receive any food for 12 to 24 hours. Once vomiting has stopped, offer small amounts of water and a bland diet. After 2 to 3 days of eating only the bland diet, begin to slowly reintroduce the original diet. Start by mixing ¾ of the bland diet to ¼ of the original diet. Gradually increase the proportion of the regular food for 3 to 5 days until you are feeding exclusively the regular food.
