Parasite Prevention
San Francisco, CA is beautiful and the weather is perfect, but the climate makes for a perfect place for parasites that can harm your pet. San Francisco Pet Hospital is dedicated to keeping your dogs and cats healthy through diligent parasite prevention and treatment.
Intestinal Parasites
Intestinal parasites are extremely common in dogs and cats. They can cause harm to our pets and are a health risk to you and your family. Intestinal parasites are usually acquired when a pet inadvertently ingests eggs or spores from contaminated soil, water, feces or food. These parasites can make your pet very ill with symptoms such as malnutrition, weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting and anemia.
Fleas
Fleas thrive in warm, humid environments like ours and reproduce rapidly once established. Flea saliva elicits a strong allergic response that can lead to hot spots and skin infections which can be both time consuming and costly to eradicate.
Ticks
Ticks are most common in wooded or grassy areas and can transmit a variety of diseases such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever to both pets and people. There are effective medications that are easily given to your pets to prevent ticks.
The annual wellness exam is a great place to discuss your questions and concerns about parasite prevention. All of our puppy and kitten patients are dewormed during the initial visits to protect your whole family. Every adult cat and dog can be protected from internal parasites with a safe, simple monthly preventive. Fortunately, we can defend against heartworms and a number of intestinal parasites with a single product.
